Alfred Roller (1864–1935) was an influential Austrian painter, graphic designer, and stage designer, best known for his significant contributions to the Vienna Secession and his revolutionary collaborations with composer Gustav Mahler at the Vienna Court Opera. He co-founded the Vienna Secession in 1897, a pivotal movement that rejected traditional art, and later served as its president in 1902. Roller's work with Mahler helped define the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) in opera, integrating staging, lighting, and costume design into a unified experience. His graphic work, including designs for the periodical Ver Sacrum and numerous exhibition posters, was highly innovative and influenced later artistic movements.
