Painted in 2004, Strings exemplifies Kawasaki’s enduring fascination with feminine sensuality rendered as something elusive and introspective. Her seductive yet restrained female figure confronts the viewer with direct eye contact, while her elongated form and subtle gesture convey melancholy and longing. Executed directly on a wood panel, the work reveals Kawasaki’s meticulous process: a pencil drawing emphasizing fluid line and rhythm, followed by acrylic and thin, transparent layers of oil paint that allow the wood grain and initial markings to remain visible. This interplay of surface and image lends the figure a spectral quality—an apparition suspended between presence and absence.
